Inspired by Chin's post. This might be old news to some, but I felt like revisiting it. I went and dug up more info. Apparently certain Rasta artists are furious with Lutan because he bigged up Bounty Killer for bringing out new talent and felt that Rasta camps within reggae music don't do the same thing. He seems to be forgetting Tony Rebel putting out Garnett Silk, Capleton and Munga Honorable via David House, the original 5th Element Crew, Sizzla and Judgement Yard and other exceptions. Apparently Rasta's are supposed to be A&Rs too.

So, of all people Anthony B confronted him at a gas station (perhaps a hazardous place for those so fond of fire bun lyrics lol) and ever since Lutan has stuck to his guns at every stageshow. Chin seems to think this 'beef' (or 'tofu' rather, being that we're dealing with strict vegans) is more dangerous than the Movado and Vybz Kartel war (which is now over after a cheesy photo-op.) Both Vybz and Movado made a grip of dubplate money though because a few sound boys thought they would be dead soon. Now they'll have plenty of time to water down their catalogs with mediocre releases, as overexposed artists are wont to do.

One thing that Chin may be right about is that whereas thug-hall deejays talk about busting their guns are rarely doing it, a lot of Rasta are not playing with their lyrics and actions. Unless they happen to be signing Babylonian agreements.... FIRE!

The poster of this video claims that it's controversial because people claim it was pre-recorded. I find the amazingly weird rendition of 'The Star Spangled Banner' is more so.

Method Man & Busta Rhymes actually rhymed over the beginning loop. What's more intriguing is that a cinematic form which does not allow kissing does allow awesome psychedelic chillum scenes.

Anyone who likes foundation sound clashes has to check out DANCEHALL REVIVAL. Jayman & crew have been holding it down with the rare soundclashes especially from the 1980's which he cleans up and adjusts for optimum sound. But y'all may not know he's been posting twice as many clashes in the DHR foundation room, and seems to have rallied everyone to post clash after clash. Some gems include a Silverhawk tape from 1988 with Brigadier Jerry, Cosmic Force vs. Metromedia in 1984 with Sugar Minott, Early B and Nitty Gritty, and some obscure sounds like Black Ivory. In response there has been a frenzy of tape posting... So check it out before all those links expire! And check out Clashes 'r' Us too while you're at it!

This is when, seemingly out of nowhere, the clash world was shaken up by the sounds called TURBOPHONICS!!! They clashed all the big sounds during a brilliant but brief 2 year period. Winterfresh ended up getting bought out by the Yankee dollar on King Addies, but the theory is Addies selector Baby Face never really gave Winterfresh a chance, as he had been before with Matterhorn. Nevertheless, Winterfresh shined brightest on Turbophonics (which is one of the tuffest sound names ever btw) and this performance in St. Lucea, Jamaica captures it quite nicely. Winterfresh is confidently taking on the juggernaut Killamanjaro the sound with the most kills along with Ricky Trooper the selector with the most kills. Turbo plays culture on a Studio One riddims right next to the top chart hits of the day all in a sound style, and they had seemingly endless amounts Capleton, Sizzla, and Bounty Killer... As an added bonus, Everton Blender & Terry Ganzie make an appearance on the sound... I couldnt find photos of Winterfresh or Turbophonics but I have some of the artistes who pass through...

Jamaican vids don't look bootleg anymore! hooray! Remember even as recently as T.O.K.'s video for 'Chi Chi Man' shot on videotape with the weird druid outfits? They don't make em like that anymore. I think they stole the druid thing from Ultramagnetic MC's 'Travelling at the Speed of Thought' video but that's just me. The best video I've seen for a modern dancehall track has been Shaggy's 'Church Heathen'. It has a defining view of the song, with the lyrics being acted out. And it has weird hooded druids too (this time they're monks tho)! The production value was high, the cameo reveal at the end was well-done, and the song was good to boot.

By contrast this vid from David House member Munga Honorebel is pretty straightforward, while the colors are nice and the angles are fish-eyed the steez is the same as rap videos from 1990: shot in the hood with every body giving each other pounds, interspersed with the artists chillin in cars, complete with cameos from the producer of the track. This is a major sound system hit right now, the video acts as a way to familiarize the viewer with Munga's seemingly conflicted style ('Gangsta Ras').

This is a tape of Ricky Trooper on Killamanjaro versus Pink Panther on Black Kat in Miami. This dance has the dubious distinction of recording one of Trooper's most infamous inventions very clearly: the Bob Marley splice dub. You can clearly hear where the 45 is clipped out for Ziggy Marley voice to come in. Regardless, this is a great clash.

Ninjaman (yes that's a MySpace link I just dropped) freestyles answers to questions, does some of his current lyrics, gives lucid speeches about a variety of topics like how badness and entertainment don't mix... He even breaks down the reggae fraternity into a quasi religious context where the styles and spirits of entertainers are affected by their stylistic predecessors. What stuck out to me was the comparison of Capleton to Saul, instead of a musical metaphor.

1985 // YOUTHMAN PROMOTIONS CREW ON 88.1 FM CKLN (CANADA)

Sugar Minott's Youthman Promotions went to Canada for the first time in 1985 and Sugar, Trevor Junior, Donna P, Daddy Ants, Colourman, Blacka T & Dickie Ranking with Pleasure Minott (Sugar's brother) at the controls made a live appearance on Canadian radio. They all take turns toasting on the Sleng Teng. Then they slow down the Stalag riddim b-side to 33 rpm and Dickie Ranking raps the 'Rambo Fast and Slow' lyrics as they switch the speed of the record back and forth from 45 to 33 while mixing the bass. "Bags of lyrics" the deejays seem stoned out of their brains when they give their interviews but they suddenly become eloquent when they chat their lyrics. The interviewer sounds shook in the beginning, he keeps referring to the "375 people" surrounding the studio. I wonder what the Canadian reggae scene was like in the 80s... Speaking of which a Canadian sound won World Clash last year, the sound name Black Reaction. I have yet to hear the audio for that but I heard good things about their performance.

Today, Sizzla continues his reflections on Rastafari with a look at the relationship between politics and Rasta.

"In the last election Prime Minister X went to Ethiopia and met with the King of Kings and had a conversation with him. He came back to Jamaica and showed the people a rod, which he said was given to him by the King, Haile Selassie the First, to bring freedom to the black people of Jamaica. He carried that rod all around during the campaign. The Rastafarians heard this; the dreadlocks heard this; and this rod caused him to win a landslide victory for the party.

The Prime Minister came to power talking like a Rastafarian. He started some progressive moves on behalf of the African peoples of this country. But after a while he forgot the rod; he forgot to talk about Africa; he forgot to talk about the Rastafarians.

The other party was so anti-black that not even Elijah Muhammad could enter Jamaica as a black man. Today, it is a little better; there is freedom of speech for I and I. As you see, we even got the Marcus Garvey Park to use. Here and there we have seen a little change on the part of the government but not enough to bring the black masses out of the slums they are in right now."(Barrett 180)

This quote, along with numerous other readings, sparks interest in the political scene and situation surrounding Jamaica, Rastafarianism and reggae music in the 1970s and what it holds for the upcoming elections. It seems to me, despite the economic shambles of Jamaica and the staunch and deliberate refusal of Rastafarians to participate in 'politricks', that politics has had a deep impact on any and every aspect of life in Jamaica. A better understanding of Jamaica's political parties, what they stood for, why they sparked gruesome violence, and their impact on Rastafarians and reggae music are necessary.

At this earlier time Rastafarianism was gradually gaining attention in Jamaica. Although typically Rastafarians didn't participate in politics, the politicians were somewhat successful in wriggling their way into the Rastafarian scene through icons, music, language and symbols.

Prime Minister Manley's relationship with Bob Marley gained him support and admiration with many Jamaicans. Manley politics and Marley's music were integrated during the rule of the PNP, with Manley and Marley even living as neighbours on Hope Road. During the first four years of the Manley regime, Marley gave many free performances at the request of the PNP - two of the most significant being the 'Smile Jamaica Concert' in 1976 and the 'One Love Peace Concert' in 1978. Just prior to the Smile Jamaica Concert, Marley, his wife Rita, and his manager Don Taylor, were shot by gunmen at Bob's home on Hope Road. Many believe that this shooting was carried out by Jamaica Labour Party supporters although no concrete evidence has ever been brought forth to support this belief.

Linkup Media has recently recorded and filmed an interview with the Don Gorgon in NYC. Apparently Ninja is allowed back through the U$ borderline after a run in with NY#D 15 years ago. I'm not quite clear on what happened, but it was severe enough to convince me that he'd never be able to come back to the U$. Check out some recent hardcore tunes from the Ninja, all recorded in the 2000s.

1) Deportee is Back - The most fitting song I could think of for Ninja's return to U$ soil. After his bad-guy character 'Deportee' from Third World Cop gets killed and dumped in a barrel, Ninja resurrects him on 45. 'Deportee is back/wickedest thing weh inna Third World Cop'.

1992 // KILLAMANJARO VS. STONE LOVE

This clash took place in 1992. Quite possibly the last recorded clash where live deejays defended a sound. I mentioned recently that Ricky Trooper was briefly criticized online for racial comments during his clash with Blunt Posse, but this is nothing new in dancehall as evidenced by Hammermouth's 'it takes ten coolie mek one nyaga man' speech. Between Charlie Chaplin, Hammermouth and later Panhead who counteracts Stone Love's Panhead dubplates, most cassette freaks give the win to Killamanjaro. Almost every dubplate selected by Ricky Trooper for Killamanjaro is a brutal soundboy killing dub (especially for 1992), whereas Stone Love played 50% bashment dubs. Jaro also had custom lyrics on their side, Stone Love's selectors end up getting very vexed at Jaro's comments and tries very hard to diss Charlie Chaplin telling him to trim his dreads. Stone Love plays 3 Nitty Gritty dubs that are FIRE on side A and several hard hitting clash dubplates including Shaggy Wonder 'Rush Dem', Tiger 'Yu Dead Now', and other favorites.... So decide for yourself who won...

ATTEMPT ON CAPLETON'S LIFE?

Sources close to Capleton believe that an attempt was been made on the popular deejay's life as over a week ago, the deejay found a common pin in a boxed food which members of his entourage had bought for him from a street-side vendor in St. Mary.
"I don't know why a man would try to harm me, but these things will happen and always happen because if you bun a certain kind of fire, and speak for those who have been suppressed and oppressed, there are people who don't want to see that," Capleton said.
"The more dem try to kill we, the more we live longer, the more they try to weaken we, the more we get stronger," he chanted.
He credits Jah with divine intervention which allowed him to see the harm and avert danger.
"Jah rule the head and eye and that's why me coulda get to see the pin, the power of Jah is on my side," said the deejay who leaves for a three month tour that will take him to Europe for eight weeks and then the United States for the remainder of the tour.
A member of the deejay's inner circle told sources that a couple members of his entourage had gone to an establishment owned by a Rastafarian and ‘ordered a food fi the King'.
"When they carried the food to the King now, and him stir it up, him see the common pin and that's how we found out, it just goes to show you that not everyone who wear locks in a true Rasta and the yutes who went for the food should know better, you cannot announce things like that because yu never know where the enemies dem lie," he said.
The deejay turns 40 on April 13th and said he might be working this year on his birthday, either in "Switzerland or Sweden."

The end of the post appears to be cut off. Given Capleton's lyrical subject matter and his immense worldwide popularity, any number of people in high places might want to silence him (apparently there a mural of Capleton in the 'banlieus' of Paris that covers the entire side of a 20 story housing project.) There are also a few deejays that have had problems with him in the past...

HONEY BOY MARTIN // DREADER THAN DREAD

These are alternate versions of the same song, something that happens quite a bit in reggae music. This basically means you have to listen to everything even if its from the same artist and the tune has the same name.

I don't know much about Honey Boy Martin. This rocksteady tune is toughest in mix 1. I have a couple other tunes from him, and they're typical 70s covers, nothing as tough as this. These two tunes are obviously older than the stuff in the link however... This sounds like what Bounty Killer would have cut had he been making music in the late 60s. Or maybe Terry Ganzie...

Wicked mixtape from Killamanjaro outta Jamaica. Dropped on DHR by the one fyah youth. I bought the CD in 2001, back when you could still find cassette men in Brooklyn (now they're all online lol). Freddy Kruger, the selector who took over Jaro after Ricky Trooper, makes a good point on the intro if you don't love these tunes, you don't love reggae (or women either lol). Longtime Jaro fans will recognize most of their more well-known foundation dubs are missing, but no matter you can hear those on most Jaro tapes. These are the kind of dubs Jaro will play early on, just to show off their belly. Most sounds would hold onto these dubs strictly for dub fi dub rounds, let alone put out a CD of them! This mix has so many huge dubplates it's impossible to name the best ones so here's the full tracklisting!

I got this from G-Wiz here DHR is a constant treasure trove of old tapes. Tenor Saw confronts King Kong during his live performance on G.T. Hi Power in 198(6?). They both sing songs on the stalag riddim but it's clear who is in a different class... 'Just like a thunder ball/Tenor Saw deh bout yah!' King Kong still did his thing though, and the clash was friendly... Of course this is also the part of the tape that flips to the next side... what the hell, it never fails, the best parts of clash tapes can be seconds long... The 45 and dubplate selections are on point too, plenty of sleng teng, stalag, and other classics and vocals by Johnny Osbourne, Half Pint, King Kong, Tenor Saw, Nitty Gritty... Download the tape!

OK as far is can tell, all of these songs, with the exception of the last one, I will be hearing tonight when my fiancee forces me to go into Manhattan, the most expensive strip of land in the USA, where a box of OJ that I used to get for free at school costs $2.00 and a 22 of budweiser costs $3.25 (WTF!) All of the aforementioned songs will be played mercilessly remixes originals blends etc. etc. I will now do a small breakdown of why each song is pretty much wack. Don't get me wrong, its ok to like these songs when they do come on in the club. Some of these may not even hits in NYC but they're getting so much burn in other places they had to be included...

Update: I didnt have to go apparently, now I am here typing this up instead of dancing to this music. Damn!

1) Make it Rain (remix) / nice generic beat, some lyrics about throwing one dollar bills at strippers. This has hit written all over it. As in the the signatures of the ppl signing the checks of whoever commands every deejay in NYC to play this hot garbage. Go listen to the Ultimate Force album that was just rediscovered, and hear Fat Joe.

2) It's Me Bitches (Remix) / after reading about it in some other blog, Status Aint Hood I think, I was thought 'wow this sounds like an accidental surreal modern masterwork.' No, its just a song Ive heard already but didnt know the name of, with Lil Wayne massacring a Jafakan accent in one line and the French language in the next. Some lyrical gems are "I let her sniff a mountain/and then shes a jumpoff" I'm sure Sizzla approves. The brillant "Voulez vous vouger avec moi ce swah" is even worse than when Ja Rule misspelled 'Veni Vidi Vici' for his album cover. This Lil Wayne guy is a hitmaker supreme!

3) I got me some BAPES (remix) / OK this one may not play tonight in Manhattan coz its a little regional. Buuuut I HAD to put it up because of Jibbs mispronouncing Nigo's name as 'Nigh-Jo' just so he could rhyme with with 'Baby Milo.' Also on this remix, Soulja Boy is actually mixed instead of thru the computer mic and he changes the word 'Mall' to 'Tokyo' in his intro, most likely after finding out that any Bathing Ape being sold at a mall is fake as hell. BIAW!

4) Vans (remix) / The Bay Area steps up to claim that they 'BEEN representing the Vans movement!'. I guess brands are movements now. Clever brags ensue, like how a shoe worth $60 a pair tops is worth putting 18 gs of diamonds in. And Ed Hardy gets a shout-out.

5) This is Why Im Hot (Reggae Remix) / Proving that this beat nor Mims ('I'm hot coz i'm fly' watertight argument right there) is actually that hot, the 1 second reggae samples and Junior 'West Siiiiiiiiiide' Reid prove to be much more enjoyable than the original song. Baby Cham doesn't do very much wit lackluster lyrics 'Never touch my money nooo/My money's dear to me'.

6) Bullet Bullet / OK this one's definitely not getting played tonight, but this guy might have gotten points for sampling Bounty Killer, and thuggy thuggy type everywhere seem to like it. But the constant repeating of words in the same line makes me want to end it end it. Then Jabba comes in a ruins all of his street cred.

here are some fresh Japanese ads for Diaclone and Microman (which would later be combined into one toyline called Transformers in the west).

some people might recognize that last one coz they were released as Kronoforms in the US. Listen to this kid earnestly pitch that the robot when standing on its head is a battle station. I don't even know what a solar creature is.

What the hell I'll throw in this classic too. The tagline is priceless, especially because the thing didn't work at all.

OK, here are some real gems from 1971 you might have caught a glimpse of these once or twice but here they are in all their c#pyright infringing glory. This is one of the beauties of having a blog no one reads. Anyway, I included the rare Air Pirates #3 a.k.a. Tortoise & Hare #1 which has a subversive take on what happens behind the scenes with the D#sney classic Tortoise & Hare short. Apparently the hare is a sleaze and the tortoise is an easily awed dopehead.

This clash was full of controversy. Some skeptics thought Ricky Trooper's departure from Killamanjaro was a mistake but Sound Trooper has had a good streak for the past year and a lot of people have given him the win in this one. He walked out after playing several race-baiting custom specials. Some say that Blunt should never spend money on those artists again. A Vybz played by Trooper was a counteraction to a counteraction, implying Kartel went to Trooper with the tune effectively proving what everyone already knows, beating a Yard sound playing Yard music with Yard music is a monumental achievement, especially since money won't help. On the flipside though, Supersonic defeated Turbo Crown in Jamaica for example, when they did not back down to threats or let the race card bother them, but a Jamaican crowd is more likely to use their ears at a clash.

This isn't the first time Trooper played the race card. He went hard at Rodgian after playing Sizzla's 'Jaro Have No White God', in fact he got so abrasive that Supercat berated him on the microphone. In another dance Trooper (on Jaro again) versus Stone Love in reference to Wee-Pow Trooper claimed that 'it takes 5 coolie to mek one black man.' For some reason I'm thinking he said that to Winterfresh too, I can't remember...

As for Blunt, they should have seen the super-reverse suplex counteractions coming, specially the race-baiting ones. It is an easy speech/idea to counter, but you'd have to pay me for the idea lol, there seem to be a lot of people that realize ideas are money these days....

I don't know much about him, but this two-sided single I found has some killer early 90s hip-hop flavored riddim tracks. His vocal trick is reminds me of Major Mackerel in a way but it's put to good use on these cuts. The A-side is a hip-hop remake of the Chase Vampire riddim and the b-side is a hip-hop flavored version of the same riddim as Mad Cobra's 'Merciless Bad Boy' & Jimmy Crazy's 'Know Bout Gun' but I'm sure there are more versions out there.

Here's a bonus jungle tune that reuses the lyrics from 'Dem No Bad Like We'.

Super Cat was on the radio recently in the tri-state area speaking on recent run-ins with the police and attempts on his life. He mentions how the music industry is exploitative and dangerous, as apparently he is the victim of an elaborate scheme to steal his identity and publishing. Super Cat is indeed one of the few reggae artists with his own label and was prolific in the early 90s on American major labels. He also claims that Shabba Ranks was duped into selling his publishing for JA$10,000 when it's worth several million US$ now. However, Cat himself has had his fair share of problems and controversy so publishing may not be the issue, there are still many unanswered questions that the ever secretive Cat has never answered publicly (to my knowledge).

Flips the bogle dance theme that's was started by Buju Banton's 'Bogle' (i don't know if the dance was named after Bogle the dancer who was murdered a few years ago or Paul Bogle). Anyway, this variation of the dance requires a Rambo-like arsenal since every move described involves shooting a different gun.
